Supply Chain is key to reducing the carbon footprint

Rail freight is the most appropriate way to decarbonize freight transport. This is why a 50% increase in rail freight traffic is expected until 2030.

Over time, sustainable development, integrated into businesses with the CSR has become a major issue. It is for this reason that supply chain actors are becoming more and more aware of the situation. These environmental challenges involve the entire Supply Chain; it plays a major role in improving their impact on society and the environment. When we talk about Supply Chain, whether it is from procurement to packaging or warehouse organization, these are areas for improvement in order to reduce the carbon footprint. What makes the environmental dimension a Obligation to reflect at each stage of the product. There are many ways to reduce the carbon footprint of the supply chain. We can optimize the use of space, think about recycling, reduce waste or even optimize transport.

Indeed, with global warming becoming an even more sensitive subject day by day, transport sector Is one of main CO2 generators. In addition, to follow up on the Paris agreements, the objective is set: to reduce emissions related to transport by 90% by 2050 and to achieve carbon neutrality. With regard to transport, for carbon neutrality, the State promotes the use of rail transport. One 1 trillion euro investment plan is planned to increase rail freight traffic. But why rail rather than another? The rail mode concentrates major advantages for the environment, by limiting greenhouse gas emissions.

The freight train emits 14 times less CO2/KM than a heavy truck for the same mass. Besides that, a train has a much better load capacity because it alone can carry the equivalent of 50 trucks. By choosing the train option rather than road, river or air transport, six times less energy is consumed, as well as eight times fewer emissions of harmful particles and nine times fewer CO2 emissions ! Railway transport emits 1.3% of CO2 emissions compared to 93% for cars.

Choosing rail for transport means thinking about tomorrow!
